THE SECOND TAIWAN STRAIT CRISIS
In late August, there was a conflict between the People’s Republic of China and Taiwan called the Second Taiwan Strait Crisis. China was trying to shell the islands of Matsu and Quemoy in an attempt to seize them from Taiwan, which caused a problem between the two countries. The PRC tried once before to control the islands in 1955 during the First Taiwan Strait Crisis but backed down after indirect negotiations with US officials. After the Second Taiwan Strait Crisis, the Republic was once again unsuccessful due to their increased concern involving American activity in Taiwan. Efforts by the Republic of China to gain control of the islands went silent until the Third Taiwan Strait in 1996.
