THE 14 JULY REVOLUTION
The first major event in 1958 took place on July 14 and was known as the 14 July Revolution. The revolution was carried out by the 14 July Revolution coup, which was led by Abd al-Salam Arif and Abd al-Karim Qasim. They overthrew the Hashemite monarchy run by King Faisal II and crown prince ‘Abd al-Ilah, and also attacked Prime Minister Nuri al-Said. The coup revolted because the three men were believed to have been cooperating with the British, which caused uproar throughout Iraq. All of the men were executed when the coup rebelled. After the revolution, the coup gained major support from Soviet power, and immediately established an Iraqi Republic with Hashemite Iraq policies.
